Kenyans demand gang-rape justice in police petition

Hundreds of protesters in Kenya have handed over a petition to police demanding justice for a teenager who was gang-raped.
The 16-year-old was gang-raped and then thrown in a pit latrine breaking her back.
The three men accused of gang-raping her were ordered by police to cut grass as punishment.

Tiananmen crash: China police 'detain suspects'

Police in China have detained five suspects in connection with Monday's deadly car crash at Beijing's Tiananmen Square, state media report.
Police have described the incident as a "violent terror attack", the Xinhua news agency says, for first time.

Two Syria chemical weapons sites not yet inspectedv


UN vehicles transporting a team of experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), leave their hotel in Damascus on 22 October, 2013International chemical weapons inspectors say "security reasons" have prevented them from visiting two sites disclosed by the Syrian government.
In a statement, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said verification activities had been completed at 21 out of 23 sites.

EU says distrust of US on spying may harm terror fight

EU leaders meeting in Brussels said distrust of the US over spying could harm the fight against terrorism.
A statement agreed by the leaders said that "a lack of trust could prejudice" intelligence-gathering co-operation.
France and Germany are pushing for talks with the US to find a new "understanding" by the year's end.

Spying row: Merkel urges US to restore trust at EU summit

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel has said it is "really not on" for friends to spy on each other, referring to alleged US snooping on her phone calls.
On arrival at an EU summit in Brussels Mrs Merkel said "we need trust between allies and partners, and such trust needs to be restored".

Residence of Limburg Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, 17 Oct 13The Vatican has suspended a senior German Church leader dubbed the "bishop of bling" by the media over his alleged lavish spending.
Bishop of Limburg Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst is accused of spending more than 31m euros (£26m; $42m) on renovating his official residence.
The Vatican said it deemed "appropriate... a period of leave from the diocese" for the bishop.

West urges Syria opposition to join Geneva talks

The talks in Geneva next month offered Syrians the "best hope to improve their lives", UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said.
He was speaking after Arab and Western foreign ministers gathered in London to meet Syrian opposition officials.

Kenya attack: Westgate mall bodies 'probably gunmen'

Two charred bodies pulled from Kenya's Westgate shopping centre on Thursday are "highly likely" to be two of the attackers, an MP has told the BBC.
Ndung'u Gethenji, chairman of the committee investigating the attack, said AK47 rifles used by the militants were found next to the bodies.

Kenya to microchip every rhino in anti-poaching drive

A Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) vet approaches a wild male black rhino after it was tranquilised, on 28 August 2013Kenya is embarking on an ambitious plan to microchip every rhino in the country in a drive to combat a surge of poaching, say wildlife officials.
The microchips will be implanted in the horns of more than 1,000 rhinos.

US Republicans in debt-ceiling offer

US Republicans have offered President Barack Obama a short-term debt limit increase to stave off default.
House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said they would do so in exchange for negotiations with the White House to end a government shutdown that took effect on 1 October.
Republicans will meet Mr Obama, who is a Democrat, later on Thursday.
