Burkina Faso parliament set ablaze

Correspondents say the city hall and ruling party headquarters are also in flames.

Oscar Pistorius begins jail sentence for Reeva Steenkamp death


South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has begun serving time in jail for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.



Police van believed to be carrying Oscar Pistorius arrives at Pretoria prison - 21 OctoberHe was driven to Pretoria's Kgosi Mampuru prison where he is expected to be housed in the hospital wing.

Judge Thokozile Masipa gave Pistorius a five-year jail sentence for culpable homicide, but cleared him of murder.

His defence said it expected him to serve about 10 months, with the remainder under house arrest. His family say he will not appeal.

Ukraine crisis: 'Column from Russia' crosses border

The Ukrainian military says it has clashed with rebel armoured vehicles that crossed from Russia and headed to the south-eastern port of Mariupol.
It said the column was halted near the town of Novoazovsk.
One military commander said pro-Russian rebels might be trying to open up a new southern front.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he had not heard the reports but complained of regular "disinformation about our 'incursions'".

Thousands of Yazidis 'still trapped' on Iraq mountain

Iraq mapTens of thousands of civilians remain trapped by militants on a mountain in northern Iraq and need "life-saving assistance", the United Nations warns.
Members of the Yazidi sect fled there 10 days ago after fighters from Islamic State (IS) seized the town of Sinjar.
US air strikes continued on Tuesday, with a drone targeting an IS mortar near Kurdish troops, the Pentagon said.

Gaza conflict: Israel 'to pursue campaign' as truce ends

Benjamin Netanyahu issued the statement after Israel's seven-hour "humanitarian window" for parts of Gaza closed.
The truce slowed violence in Gaza, although Palestinians said Israel broke it by hitting a house in Gaza City.

Air Algerie AH5017: 'No survivors' from crash in Mali

There are no survivors from the Air Algerie AH5017 passenger jet that crashed in Mali, says the French President, Francois Hollande.
Mr Hollande said one flight data recorder had been recovered, after French troops reached the crash site near Mali's border with Burkina Faso.
Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane early on Thursday after pilots reported severe storms.
Almost half of the 116 people on board were French, including a family of 10.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 had been chartered from Spanish airline, Swiftair. It was flying from Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou, to Algiers.

Kenya attacks: 'Women abducted' near Mpeketoni

The Islamist group Boko Haram has been accused of killing at least 27 people in attacks on two villages in north-east Nigeria, close to where hundreds of schoolgirls were seized.
Gunmen killed 10 people in the village of Shawa and a further 17 in Alagarno, police and witnesses said.

The US has charged five Chinese army officers with hacking into private-sector American companies in a bid for competitive advantage, in the first cyber-espionage case of its kind.

Russia orders exercises after Ukraine moves on separatists

Russia has ordered new military exercises on its border with Ukraine in response to an operation by Kiev against pro-Russian separatists.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Moscow had been "forced to react" after Ukrainian commandos moved on the separatist stronghold of Sloviansk.
President Vladimir Putin had earlier warned Ukraine of "consequences".

US economic growth rate revised down

Cars in ChicagoThe US economy grew at a much slower rate from October to December than originally predicted, the US Commerce Department said.
US gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annualised rate of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2013, down from an initial estimate of 3.2%.
The revision is down to weaker than expected consumer spending.

US planning full Afghan pullout, Obama tells Karzai

US troops in AfghanistanPresident Barack Obama has warned his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai that the US may pull all of its troops out of his country by the year's end.
Mr Obama conveyed the message in a phone call to Mr Karzai, who has refused to sign a security agreement.
The US insists this agreement must be in place before it commits to leaving some troops behind for counter-insurgent operations and training.

Crystal is 'oldest scrap of Earth crust'

ZirconA tiny 4.4-billion-year-old crystal has been confirmed as the oldest fragment of Earth's crust.
The zircon was found in sandstone in the Jack Hills region of Western Australia.
Scientists dated the crystal by studying its uranium and lead atoms. The former decays into the latter very slowly over time and can be used like a clock.
The finding has been reported in the journal Nature Geoscience.
Its implication is that Earth had formed a solid crust much sooner after its formation

Fujitsu develops glove-style tech

Fujitsu has unveiled a wearable device in the form of a glove at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
It features near-field communication (NFC) and gesture-based technology. It is aimed at people who cannot use conventional smartphone or tablet devices while working because they need to wear gloves.
By touching an object using the glove device users can receive information displayed on a "head-mounted display".

Belgium's parliament votes through child euthanasia

Parliament in Belgium has passed a bill allowing euthanasia for terminally ill children without any age limit, by 86 votes to 44, with 12 abstentions.
When, as expected, the bill is signed by the king, Belgium will become the first country in the world to remove any age limit on the practice.
It may be requested by terminally ill children who are in great pain and also have parental consent.

The international community must act on evidence of widespread crimes against humanity in North Korea, say the authors of a long-awaited UN report.
A panel of experts mandated by the UN's Human Rights Council said North Koreans had suffered "unspeakable atrocities", and that those responsible, including leader Kim Jong-un, must face justice.

Gaia 'billion-star surveyor' returns test image

LMCEurope's billion-star surveyor, Gaia, is on track to begin operations in the next two or three months.
Launched in December, the satellite has now taken up its observing station some 1.5 million km from Earth.

Scientists have created a bionic hand which allows the amputee to feel lifelike sensations from their fingers.
A Danish man received the hand, which was connected to nerves in his upper arm, following surgery in Italy.
